Dr. Mehmet Unsoy

Dr. Mehmet Unsoy is a telecom market and technology expert and visionary, with 30 years of data, broadband and wireless communication experience, beginning with Arpanet in the 1970’s.Dr Unsoy

Since Sep 2002, Dr. Mehmet Unsoy has been serving as Advisor and Consultant to several U.S.based large VCs firms, for their investments in the wireless industry. He has been on the Board of Directors and Advisory Boards of more than two dozen wireless related technology companies, across the wireless value chain, in the U.S., CartagenaCanada and Europe. Dr. Unsoy is currently a Partner at Cartagena Capital, Munich-based wireless-focused global corporate finance firm. He has been working on several mergers & acquisitions (M&A) and fundraising projects for various European TMT companies.

Dr. UnsoyTipra is also a Founding Partner of TIPRA, Dallas head-quartered, invitation-only global network of world-class senior experts in selected economically-important high-tech focus areas.

Prior to Sep 2002, for about 3 years, he was based in London, U.K.,O2 as CTO / CIO / VP - Chief Wireless Architect for O2 / BT Wireless / BT. Initially, he was responsible for the 3G and multimedia network deployment plans for BT’s entire mobility portfolio, consisting of wireless operators in 17 countries around the world. With the spinning off of BT Wireless, which was subsequently branded as O2, he took on the Vice President - Chief Wireless Architect role, responsible for the BTend-to-end technology and architectural evolution of O2’s mobile operators in the U.K., Germany, Holland and Ireland, with total 20 Million subscribers. He and his team developed the common and consistent architecture that span radio, core networks, services, portals, and IT systems for multiple operators that are part of O2. The key focus was the leveraging of IP technologies as networks rolled out GPRS and 3G systems to offer various national and international mobile Internet services and applications.

Dr. Unsoy was with Nortel Networks from 1992 to 1999, and was based in Tokyo for Nortelthe first 3 years as Director of Data / Broadband Products, working with the Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Australian and other operators in Asia/Pacific. In 1995, he moved to the Internet Products division of Nortel in Dallas, as Director of Marketing for all of the U.S. market, and subsequently initiated the Wireless Internet thrust for Nortel’s Wireless Products division. In 1999, he focused on launching 2.5G wireless networks with mobile operators in Asia / Pacific, such as China Telecom, SK Telecom and Telstra.BNR\

From 1982 to 1991, Mehmet was with Bell Northern Research (BNR),Bell in Ottawa, Canada, with progressively increasing responsibilities, with the final 3 years as Director of Product Development, for ATM and broadband products. Prior to BNR, he was a manager for 5 years with Bell Canada’s Computer Communications Group in Ottawa, helping to set up Datapac, Canada’s first public packet network. 

Dr. Unsoy received his BSEE degree from METU in Ankara, Turkey ODTU in 1973, and MS and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, Canada. UoWHis Ph.D. thesis was on congestion control and routing in Arpanet. He has served in various international telecommunication standards organizations, published numerous articles and has been a regular conference speaker on data communications, wireless Internet and the future of the wireless industry.  He is a long time member of IEEE.
