"Even though the world is facing some severe economic difficulties, Apple is in a very healthy position. They have over $25 billion cash reserves, 35% gross margins and thus they have the financial means to maintain leadership in innovation and market deployment of iPhones. Apple has a VC fund that they use to steer innovation and applications. Some analysts are predicting around 77 million iPhones deployed in the next 4 years, and that Apple would grab the smartphone market-share leadership from Nokia, by taking 40% of this prestigious high-margin market. Also, the vertical integration with their iTunes App Store will give Apple a strong standing, and will allow Apple to influence the future direction of the wireless industry as a whole. Whether these predictions are right or wrong, it is fair to expect that Apple, iPhone and iTunes will play a major role in the near future of the wireless industry. Especially Apple’s willingness to adopt disruptive, game-changing technologies and business models, should give everyone in the wireless industry, reason to monitor closely what Apple is doing!" |

"The major theme of this congress was mobile broadband. HSPA deployments have really taken off, with 174 commercial HSDPA deployments, 36 of them delivering 7.2 Mbps download speeds. They are targeting 42 Mbps and 12 Mbps for downlink and uplink respectively, using HSPA+/ HSPA Evolved by 2009. These are outstanding data rates! Also significant is that there are currently 420 HSPA enabled mobile devices, including the USB dongles, for laptops. Speaking of laptops, the mobile broadband Notebook competition was won by Dell and ECS, with HSPA embedded notebooks, at $550 price points, which is rather impressive! This HSPA enabled notebook market is estimated to be a $50B global market." |

"I believe WiMAX is a potential game changer, in more ways than one. It introduces new technologies, changes economics, enables new business models and brings in new players. Similar to the situation when Wi-Fi first came onto the scene about 6-7 years ago, it will be controversial for WiMAX. Will it compete or complement existing mobile infrastructures? How does it differ or what new values does it bring, at what cost, and will it really take off, and if so when?" |

"Mobile advertising is going to be a game changing event, potentially shifting the paradigm of the ARPU based business models. Google’s formal entry into the mobile world confirms this shift. " |
